Back in June, GOGII launched textPlus, a free SMS service for your iPhone or iPod touch. Not only does textPlus let you send and receive SMS messages for free, it also supports group chat. Basically, it’s a text-lovers dream.

We knew the lure of free SMSing would be popular, but check this out: since June 1, the textPlus app has been downloaded 1.6 million times and 80 million texts have been sent using the service, which comes out to an average of 1.6 million texts per day.

As the New York Times pointed out this morning, teenagers are a perfect fit for textPlus. The price-point (free) is obviously attractive to teens who might not have any say over what text-messaging package their phone uses, plus the group feature is a great way to make plans and for lots of teens to talk at once.

Pretty cool idea as long as you have an Internet connection and hey, who doesn’t like free?  IPhone or iPod Touch users can download the app free from the iPhone app store.
